Microsoft Agent was a technology developed by Microsoft that allows for users to interact with animated characters inside applications and web pages. It used text to speech engines to allow the animated characters to speak to the end user. These animated characters were called "Microsoft Agents". It came preinstalled with Windows beginning with Windows 98. Microsoft Agent continued to release alongside all Windows versions until Windows 7 in 2009, following Microsoft's discontinuation of Microsoft Agent. The latest release of Microsoft Agent was version 2.0 on October 12th, 1998.
Microsoft Agent allowed for users of the software to make characters through the Microsoft Agent Character Editor. Four default characters were made by Microsoft on the original page, including Genie, Merlin, Peedy, and Robby. Some other notable characters are those featured in the Microsoft Office suite throughout 1997 to 2003, including Clippy, Dot, or Office Logo. The Windows XP search assistants are also Microsoft Agents, including Rover. Another mentionable Microsoft Agent is Bonzi, a purple gorilla that came bundled BonziBUDDY until its discontinuation. The Bonzi character later received a lot of attention after being a meme following multiple meme videos on it before a streamer eventually streamed an XP destruction causing the popularity of the Bonzi character to rise.
Pepe is a Microsoft Agent character created by Dave Higham. He became available for download on his pepedog.com website in 2000 alongside the Music Scripting Helper. Pepe was also the mascot of both DogAgent.com and Pepedog.com, two popular Microsoft Agent websites in the early 2000s.
Genie is a Microsoft Agent character released by Microsoft Corporation. He was one of the original four Microsoft Agents released by Microsoft, which also include Robby, Merlin, and Peedy. It is suspected that Genie was the first Microsoft Agent character to be developed.
Gourdy is a Microsoft Agent character developed by Rayflex Animation in 1997. He was used in a demonstration page on Rayflex Animation's website as an example of one of the characters that someone could request be made for a project. His appearance is a gray carved jack-o-lantern.
Rover is a Microsoft Agent character released by Microsoft Corporation as part of the Windows XP search. Rover's appearance throughout all versions is a yellow dog with a red collar. Rover originated from Microsoft Bob, which is widely considered a predecessor to Microsoft Agent. He had a similar appearance and was stored in the .ACT (Microsoft Actor) file format.
Microsoft Agent 1.3 (also known as Microsoft Agent Beta 2) is a development release of Microsoft Agent released on June 30th, 1997. It is the earliest confirmed version of Microsoft Agent known to exist besides Microsoft Agent Beta. Not much information is public about this release of Microsoft Agent. Screenshots of this version were found inside of the Microsoft Agent Development Kit book.
Max is a Microsoft Agent character released by Bonzi Software, Inc. as part of the MaxALERT software. His appearance takes inspiration from the Peedy Microsoft Agent, as demonstrated by the parrot design. The Max character remained "lost" for a long time after the shutdown of Bonzi.com. However, the Max ACS was later found in 2018.
Clippit (or Clippy) is a Microsoft Agent and Microsoft Actor character developed by Microsoft Corporation. Clippit came with Microsoft Office 97 as a Microsoft Actor and in Microsoft Office 2000, XP, and 2003 as a Microsoft Agent.
